Pizza Burgers – Two Favorite Comfort Foods in One!

We all know that pizza and burgers are primary comfort foods. So it only makes sense to combine them! They’re easy enough to make on a busy weeknight and fun enough for a weekend dinner at home. Juicy beef with melty cheese, rich marinara sauce, and toasty buns are what your comfort dreams are made of!

Ingredients

Here’s everything you need to make Pizza burgers, including simple substitutions.

  • 1 pound ground beef – Look for 80/20 or 85/15 ground beef for that ideal juicy bite. Lean beef (like 90/10) tends to dry out too quickly. Ground Italian sausage or a beef/pork blend would also work here!
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt + ¼ teaspoon black pepper – Kosher salt disperses nicely in the meat, and black pepper adds a subtle bite.
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil + 2 teaspoons dried oregano – Classic pizza herbs! These bring that pizzeria flavor straight into the burger.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or grated – Fresh garlic gives the patties flavor. You can sub in 1 teaspoon garlic powder—just mix it with the dry seasonings.
  • ¾ cup pizza sauce, divided – Adds moisture and that signature pizza flavor. Use your favorite jarred brand, or homemade.
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese – This adds the signature melty and gooey cheese. Swap with provolone or even a shredded Italian blend.
  • 12 pepperoni slices – This gives each burger that unmistakable pizza vibe. You can leave these off or sub in turkey pepperoni.
  • Fresh chopped basil (optional) – This adds a final pop of color and freshness.
  • 4 hamburger buns – Use your favorite—classic, brioche, pretzel, or even ciabatta!

How To Make A Pizza Burger

Mix ground beef with sauce, garlic, and seasonings, cook in a skillet, top with cheese and pepperoni, then serve on buns with extra sauce.

  1. Mix together the ground beef, salt, pepper, basil, oregano, garlic, and two tablespoons of sauce.
  2. Divide into four equal parts and shape into patties.
  3. Cook each patty for about three minutes per side in a skillet over medium heat.
The ground beef mixture mixed together and then divided into four patties.
  4. Pour ½ cup of sauce around the burgers.
  5. Top each burger with cheese and pepperoni.
The patties cooked in pizza sauce and topped with mozzarella and pepperoni.
  6. Cover the pan and cook for one more minute to melt the cheese and warm the pepperoni.
  7. Finally, toast the buns and assemble the burgers with additional sauce and fresh basil before serving.
The cheese melted on the burgers and then placed on toasted buns.

Recipe Tips

  • 85/15 or 80/20 ground beef is best. Avoid lean beef. Adjust cook time per side depending on your desired burger doneness.
  • Fresh garlic is best, but you can substitute 1 teaspoon of garlic powder.
