Ingredients:

Here’s everything you’ll need to make this taco guacamole:

  1. Avocados: The star of the show! Choose ripe avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. Substitute with firm Haas avocados and let them ripen at room temperature for a few days.
  2. Roma Tomato: Adds a touch of sweetness and freshness. Substitute with another small, juicy tomato, like cherry or grape tomatoes, if desired.
  3. Red Onion: Offers a subtle bite and crunch. Use a white onion for a milder flavor, but be aware it can be stronger.
  4. Fresh Cilantro: Provides a bright, citrusy aroma and taste. Substitute with parsley for a similar, but less robust, flavor.
  5. Fresh Limes: Essential for adding brightness and acidity. Bottled lime juice can be used in a pinch, but fresh is always preferable. A good substitute for lime juice in guacamole would be lemon juice, orange juice, grapefruit juice, or white vinegar. Note that vinegar will add a mild tanginess.
  6. Ground Cumin: Enhances the earthy flavor profile. You can substitute with chipotle or chili powder for a smokier twist, but remember to use less as they are spicier.
  7. Salt: Balances the flavors and brings out the best in the ingredients. Use kosher salt or sea salt for a cleaner taste.
  8. Pepper: Adds a touch of heat and depth. Experiment with different types of peppercorns (black, white, etc.) for a unique flavor profile.
All of the ingredients needed to make this recipe.

Top Tips & Tricks:

Here are some easy tips to elevate your guacamole game:

  • Ripeness matters: Use ripe avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. Unripe avocados will lack flavor, while overripe ones will be mushy.
  • Cilantro: Don’t skip the cilantro! It adds a bright, fresh flavor. Chop it finely for even distribution.
  • Lime Time: Freshly squeezed lime juice is essential. Bottled lime juice can be used in a pinch, but fresh will always taste brighter.
  • Serve immediately: Guacamole browns quickly due to avocado oxidation. Make it just before serving for the best flavor and color.

What To Eat With Guacamole:

We recommend using this guacamole to make a Cafe Rio feast with our black beans, sweet pork, cilantro-lime rice, and creamy tomatillo dressing. Want more flavor? Top it off with pico de gallo or your favorite salsa!

Fresh guacamole shines with tortilla chips, but don’t stop there! Try crudités like carrot sticks, cucumber slices, or bell pepper strips for a healthy and refreshing combo.

Storage Tips:

SERVE: Guacamole is best served immediately when it’s fresh. This recipe is excellent for burrito guacamole, tacos, quesadillas, salads, and more.

STORE: If you have leftover guacamole, prevent browning by pressing plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole. This minimizes air contact and helps preserve freshness for a short time of about 1-2 days. Remember, the fresher, the better!

FREEZE: Freezing guacamole is technically possible but is not generally recommended for optimal taste and texture. Here’s why:

  • Loss of Texture: Avocados have a high water content, which can form ice crystals during freezing. These crystals can disrupt the creamy texture, making the thawed guacamole watery and mushy.
  • Flavor Degradation: Enzymes in avocados continue to break down even when frozen, leading to a loss of fresh flavor and browning.
