Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Unsalted butter – You can use salted butter. Just omit the salt in the recipe.
  • Milk – You can use any milk except skim milk.
  • Vanilla – You can use vanilla extract, imitation vanilla, or vanilla bean paste.
  • Eggs – There really are no substitutions for the eggs in this recipe.
  • All-purpose flour – This helps add a little structure to the delicate cake mix batter.
  • Funfetti cake mix – Instead of Funfetti cake mix, you can use vanilla, white, strawberry, red velvet, carrot, etc. This recipe is so versatile!
  • Salt – This helps the flavors pop.
  • Granulated sugar – The waffles needed just a little bit more sweetness, plus we love how it helps caramelize the edges of the waffles as they cook in the waffle iron.
  • Sprinkles – Use your favorite sprinkles to make these festive.

    Recipe Tip

From experience making these waffles multiple times, I have learned that it is best to fold in the sprinkles just before cooking to prevent the colors from bleeding into the batter. This keeps the sprinkles vibrant and ensures that each waffle is visually appealing and festive.

    Make It A Meal

I recommend serving these Birthday Cake Waffles with a glass of milk, fresh fruit such as apple slices, banana slices, fresh berries, whipped cream, scrambled eggs, and some sausage or bacon for a filling and delicious meal.

    Storage

    Serve:

Enjoy the birthday waffles immediately with your favorite toppings. If needed, you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 hours.

    Store:

Let the waffles cool completely, then wrap them in plastic wrap or parchment paper. Place the wrapped waffles in an airtight container or freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months.

    Thaw:

Thaw the waffles overnight in the refrigerator. Alternatively, you can thaw them in the microwave on the defrost setting for a few minutes or in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.

    Reheat:

To reheat a single waffle, toast it in a toaster. For multiple waffles, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 5-10 minutes or until heated through.
